Sonic Brings Mario Kart Fun to iPad

When it comes to kart racers, there has always been Mario Kart… and then everything else. From South Park to Angry Birds and even Ben 10, every major brand out there has seemingly given Nintendo’s landmark series a paint job and a re-release, but none have really come close to matching Mario’s magic formula. Until recently. Sega, Nintendo’s one-time arch nemesis, has hired Sumo Digital to deliver something certainly worthy of non-Nintendo kart lovers’ attention with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

The game gets its name from the ability of each of the many Sega-themed vehicles to transform between wheeled, water and air-based forms, all within the one track. As you head in and out of certain zones, the “karts” automatically transform, usually alongside a dramatic shift in track conditions. It sounds like it should be awkward, but it actually works surprisingly well, thanks largely to the handling that ensures a seamless transition and the inspired track variety. All your expected boost, powerslide and power-up mechanics also in place.

The game has just come out on the iPad and it’s an impressive port. It even comes with a bonus exclusive character in Ryo Hazuki of Shenmue fame. You can grab it here
