868-Hack Developer Announces Helix

It was extremely minimalist, but developer Michael Brough's 868-Hack was also pure genius. Not only did it make our Best 50 iOS Indie Games of 2013 list, but it was also declared the best game of 2013 by Boson X creator Ian MacLarty, and I can also reveal it was on the subs bench for République creator Ryan Payton’s list, too.

The developer has just announced his next game, Helix. The game is due out later in 2014 and looks to be equally short on presentation. You play an eye that circles around various threats in order to defeat them. Recalling Asteroids, the eye sits in the centre of a small area, with enemies approaching from all angles. Any contact; you’re dead.

It looks like it will follow Hack-868’s slow reveal of abilities and moves, where experimentation opens up more avenues for success. For example, if an enemy has an arrow on it, circling around them in that indicated direction equals a kill. Some big enemies need to be circled multiple times to be killed. Even cute things like butterflies will kill you in this harsh world, and we understand the game will feature some tough bosses.

It’s fantastic to know Brough has something new in the pipeline, but as he is currently focused on bringing 868-Hack to PC, this potential iOS gem is unlikely to be with us until later in the year.  In the interim, a very early gameplay video can be found below:
